Course Introduction:

The course in Apply Advanced First Aid qualification gives graduates the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of casualty(ies), management of the incident and other first aiders until the arrival of medical or other assistance.

Qualification & Recognition:

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment in Apply Advanced First Aid HLTFA402B.

Pre-Requisite:

Nil, however it is recommended that participants have literacy competencies equivalent to Level 2 as described in the Certificates of General Education for Adults (2112AFL, 2212AKC, 2212ALC)

Job Prospects:

The skills and knowledge gained in this program may be applied in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings such as the Aged Care industries, Swimming Centres, Hospitality industries, and Nursing

Course Length & Delivery:

The program is delivered on campus at CTA or in a group session at your workplace.

On Campus: The program duration is 14 hours which runs over 2 days starting from 9.15am – 3.15pm.
Workplace: 1 day workbook approach: Participants complete a theory workbook in their own time prior to the practical session. This saves organisations 1 day per participant and cost savings. Why lose your staff for 2 or 3 days when they can complete it in 1 day?

Assessment:

Competency is assessed through demonstration with questioning to confirm essential knowledge. Demonstration of skills in CPR procedures requires using a model of the human body (resuscitation manikin).

Registration forms can be downloaded from www.ctaonline.com.au. The completed form can be submitted to CTA in person or via mail/fax with the required supporting documentation and payment to ensure your place in the course.

The unit of competency covers the areas of first aid response, life support and management of casualty(ies), the incident and other first aiders.

Management of casualty will include:

  • Abdominal injuries
  • Airway obstruction
  • Allergic reactions
  • Altered and loss of consciousness
  • Bleeding
  • Burns – thermal, chemical, friction, electrical
  • Chest Pain / Cardiac arrest
  • Injuries: cold and crush injuries, eye and ear injuries, head, neck and spinal injuries, minor skin injuries, needle stick injuries, soft tissue injuries including sprains, strains, dislocations
  • Near drowning
  • Envenomation – snake, spider, insect and marine bites.
  • Environmental conditions such as hypothermia, hyperthermia, dehydration, heat stroke
  • Fractures
  • Medical conditions including cardiac conditions, epilepsy, diabetes, asthma and other respiratory conditions
  • No signs of life
  • Poisoning and toxic substances
  • Respiratory distress/arrest
  • Seizures
  • Shock
  • Stroke
  • Substance misuse – common drugs and alcohol, including illicit drugs.
  • Awareness of stress management techniques and available support
  • Social legal issues: duty of care, need to be culturally aware, sensitive and respectful.
